What: On Nov 6 (next Wednesday), the UH Board of Regents will consider a resolution that could have significant impacts on the Maunakea Observatories (MKOs). Details in the link. Among other things, the resolution makes commitments on decommissioning and reorganizing the management of Maunakea. In it, the removal of five telescopes is intended as mitigation for TMT being built on Maunakea, but the resolution doesn’t make this clear, and the decommissioning commitments are premature given that the future of TMT is still undecided. We also want to ensure that all the MKOs have input to any reorganization of management and services on Maunakea because their operations are highly dependent on these functions.
Action Item: Submit your testimony in advance of the meeting by Nov 5 at 9 AM. The easiest way to submit is to send it via email to bor.testimony@hawaii.edu ; alternatively you can fax to 956-5156. Make sure you reference “UH Board of Regents Resolution 19-03” in the subject line.
